ALWAYS
protect yourself from the sun. It is hotter than you think !
BARGAINING
always smile and bargain with good humor. Not only is it fun but will also help you to get the best prices.
BECKON
waiters or anyone you wish to talk to with the hand, palm downwards, fingers straight and waving upend down. Don't crook your finger, clap, snap your fingers or hiss.
BUDDHA
images should be treated with great respect. It is against the law to take or send them out of Thailand except under very special circumstances.
CLOTHES
.. make sure you have the proper clothes when visiting temples. Women should have covered shoulders and not too short pants, men should also not go without T-shirt . Don't forget to take off your shoes when entering the inner temple area.
FEET
must be kept to yourself. Not on the table and certainly not pointing an anybody.
FLATTER
whenever possible. Thai's love it, especially when you say nice things about Thailand. Hair and head should not be touched. If you do so by accident, excuse yourself.
MONKS
are the most important people in the society and must be treated with respect at all times. Touching a monk or his robes by a women is strictly taboo. Please say "Thank You" or smile your appreciation. The Thai phrase is "Kaup Khun Krap" by a man and "Kaup Khun Kha" by a woman.
POINTING
with the finger is acceptable for objects and animals but not for people.
RELAX
take it easy - at least at the beginning of your stay. You will soon come to appreciate and enjoy the Thai's laid-back attitude to time and punctually. Keep pressure for when you get home !
SHOES
should be taken off before entering a temple or someone's home!
SMILE
and people will like you. A smile can be used to excuse small inconveniences, to thank for small services and to return the wai of small children and servants.
